Your Optimal Sleep Times
Based on 90-minute sleep cycles. Waking between cycles helps you feel refreshed.
Understanding Sleep Cycles
A complete sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and consists of 4 stages. Understanding these stages helps you optimize your sleep for maximum recovery.
Light Sleep
Stage 1-2 • ~20 min
Your body begins to relax. Heart rate slows, muscles relax, and brain waves start to slow down. This is the easiest stage to wake from.
Deep Sleep Begins
Stage 3 • ~20 min
Body repairs tissues, builds bone and muscle. Immune system strengthens during this phase. Body temperature drops.
Deep Sleep
Stage 3-4 • ~30 min
Most restorative stage. Growth hormone released. Hardest to wake up during this stage. Critical for physical recovery.
REM Sleep
Dreaming Stage • ~20 min
Brain activity increases. Dreams occur. Memory consolidation and learning happen here. Eyes move rapidly behind lids.
Typical Sleep Cycle Pattern Throughout the Night
Did You Know? 😴
Your sleep cycles aren’t all the same! Early in the night, you get more deep sleep (great for physical recovery). Later in the night, you get more REM sleep (amazing for memory and creativity). That’s why cutting sleep short hurts both your body and mind!
That’s why waking up at the right time matters — it’s not just about how long you sleep, but when you wake up within your cycle.
Better Sleep Tips
Expert-backed advice to improve your sleep quality and wake up feeling amazing every day
Cool Room Temperature
Keep your bedroom between 60-67°F (15-19°C). A cool environment signals your body it’s time to sleep and helps maintain deep sleep stages.
No Screens Before Bed
Avoid screens 1-2 hours before bed. Blue light suppresses melatonin production. Try reading a book or meditation instead.
Consistent Schedule
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This trains your circadian rhythm for better sleep.
Limit Caffeine
Avoid caffeine after 2 PM. It has a half-life of 5-6 hours and can significantly reduce sleep quality even if you fall asleep easily.
Relaxation Routine
Create a 30-minute wind-down routine: warm bath, gentle stretching, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation techniques.
Dark Environment
Make your room as dark as possible. Use blackout curtains and cover LED lights. Even small light sources can disrupt melatonin production.
